1969, The Stonewall Inn, resides in Greenwich Village of New York City. A local gay bar, which until recently, could not even serve alcohol legally to LGBT citizens. Solicitation of LGBT people was still however illegal, so police would often harass the local establishments. Early in the morning of June 28th, the Inn was raided by police. The patrons and nearby residents then began a violent riot that lasted for 6 days.
The event led to various organizations being formed including the Gay Liberation Front, Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD (formerly Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), and PFLAG (formerly Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays)
At the 1 year anniversary mark, another riot occurred on the streets of Manhattan, thousands of people formed what's widely considered the first gay pride parade, called "Christopher Street Liberation Day".
